Victoria Barbecue Raises $336,000 for Men’s Health
Several longtime Southern barbecue spots draw diners with regional traditions and unpretentious settings. South Carolina’s Sweatman’s Bar-B-Que, based in a rural farmhouse since 1977, is known for whole-hog pork, mustard sauce, and hash and rice; its history traces to an earlier family business opened in 1959. Birmingham’s Dreamland BBQ has built a following around hickory-fired ribs and its Alabama barbecue roots. In Auburndale, Florida, Peebles Bar-B-Q has served low-and-slow barbecue in an old-fashioned setting since 1947. Houston’s barbecue history is also linked to Matt Garner, whose Beaumont experience helped shape the city’s barbecue tradition, including offset brick pits and Beaumont-style all-beef sausage.
