Scheffler concedes long putt after fan yell at 2026 Presidents Cup

The PGA Tour posted a YouTube video titled "A classy move by Scottie Scheffler 👏." It centers on the world No. 1 conceding a long par putt after a fan yelled during his opponent’s swing at the 2026 Presidents Cup.

The channel’s description says Scheffler conceded a 32-footer for par after a spectator interrupted Nico Echavarria’s backswing. ESPN placed the moment on the par-4 14th hole at Medinah Country Club’s No. 3 course during Sunday singles. Scheffler was 3 up at the time.

A fan shouted “Go Scottie!” as Echavarria began his swing, according to ESPN and GOLF.com. The tee shot pushed 226 yards into the right rough. Golfweek’s Adam Schupak reported that Echavarria dropped his club in disgust. GOLF.com and NBC Sports described him glaring at the gallery. Scheffler walked toward the crowd and yelled, “There’s no place for that!” NBC Sports carried the line.

Echavarria’s third shot ran over the back of the green. He faced 32 feet for par, ESPN and GOLF.com reported; some accounts called it a 30-footer. Scheffler conceded it. He then missed his own birdie putt from 17 to 19 feet. Both players took four. The hole was halved. NBC on-course reporter John Wood called the concession “A pure touch of class,” Golfweek reported.

Scheffler closed out the match 2-and-1. Echavarria had kept it alive by chipping in from 60 to 64 feet on the 16th, GOLF.com and NBC Sports said, before the contest ended on the 17th. The United States won the Presidents Cup, 17-13.

Scheffler brushed off the episode afterward. “There’s no real place for that in our game and I’ll leave it at that,” he said, according to other outlets. To a wider group of reporters he added, GOLF.com reported: “It’s just ridiculous, somebody yelling in his swing off the tee. There’s absolutely no place for that. You should get 30 seconds to a minute when you’re over the ball or getting ready to hit your shot where there’s some silence, and it’s just frustrating.”

Echavarria, in his Presidents Cup debut for the International team, saw the gesture another way. “(It) shows the character of the No. 1 in the world,” he said, per NBC Sports and The Associated Press. “He’s just different. Even how good he is, he’s a truly amazing guy.”
