Skattebo's 42-yard run redeems roughness flag vs. Texans
Giants running back Cam Skattebo drew a helmet penalty then ripped a career-long 42-yard carry that set up the decisive score in a 26-21 overtime win over the Texans.

A YouTube short by the channel Andychangftw under the title "Cam Skattebo Got the Last Laugh 😤 #shorts #nfl" The channel’s own description says New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo drew an unnecessary roughness flag in Week 7 against the Houston Texans for leading with his head on a rush, then answered with a career-long 42-yard run that set up the decisive score.
Arizona Sports, in a report by Bailey Leasure, wrote that Skattebo’s day opened with a seven-yard carry in the first quarter on which he lowered his helmet and drew a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty. SB Nation’s Ricky O’Donnell identified the defender as Texans safety M.J. Stewart. Ian Hartitz posted on X the same day: “Cam Skattebo penalized for lowering the helmet … something I’m pretty certain he’s done every touch of his career?”
CBS Sports noted the rarity. Heading into Week 7, officials had thrown only four lowering-the-helmet flags all season league-wide, and only one other against an offensive player—Houston’s Foster Moreau, on a Week 2 punt return. Skattebo became the only player flagged for it while running the ball on offense.
He kept running the same way. Arizona Sports reported that Skattebo broke several tackles on a 16-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, his first score since Week 1, and finished the play with his signature backflip. The game reached overtime tied 24-24. Skattebo then ripped off the 42-yard career-long carry that moved the Giants into Texans territory. Devin Singletary scored from 30 yards on the next snap. Final score: Giants 26, Texans 21.
Skattebo finished with a career-best 124 rushing yards on 17 carries and one touchdown, according to both Arizona Sports and SB Nation. A week earlier he had been benched and finished with zero carries to the New Orleans Saints. Giants quarterback JJ McCarthy went 20-of-28 for 252 yards in the Texans win, SB Nation reported, and New York improved to 4-2-1 under head coach John Harbaugh.
Asked afterward whether he would alter his style, Skattebo did not hedge. USA Today quoted him: “The NFL loves to post me when I do stuff like that but then also wants to take stuff from me. I’m going to run the ball like I want to run the ball. If I’m going to continue to get flags for it or fined for it, guess I’m going to play for free.” CBS Sports carried the same postgame remarks and reported that Skattebo made plain he intends to keep seeking contact. SB Nation summarized the stance as a vow to “play for free” rather than tone it down.
