Pressley Presses Bessent on Unmet Promises at Hearing

Secretary Bessent said he would check with his staff. He had not seen the report.

The exchange, later circulated under the title “She Humiliates Him With This!,” took place during the Treasury secretary’s annual testimony on the state of the international financial system before the House Financial Services Committee on September 15, 2026. Representative Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts’s 7th District, which covers most of Boston and surrounding cities including Cambridge, Chelsea, and Somerville, returned to a promise Bessent had made under oath the previous February. Hundreds of thousands of Black workers had been pushed out of the workforce, she told him, and unemployment rates over the last year had not been this high since the COVID-19 pandemic. More people were out of work than before Trump took office in 2025. Bessent had testified that he would analyze Black unemployment data and report back on its impacts to the financial stability of the U.S. economy. Pressley asked whether he had begun working on that report.

“I will check with my staff. I have not seen it,” Bessent replied.

Pressley asked whether he could make a commitment to honor what he had said on the record under oath. “Of course,” he said. When she pressed for a date, he answered that he would check with his staff and they would communicate a date certain. Pressley then laid out the scale she saw. At one point, 300,000 Black women had been pushed out of the workforce, most of them from the federal government. In 80 percent of Black families, Black women are the primary breadwinner. “So this is something of great consequence,” she said.

She told him he was on thin ice. In an earlier tariffs conversation before the same committee she had asked him to be a partner in pushing for an exemption of baby products. He had told her she had a partner in that advocacy. Nothing came of it. Twice, she said, he had come before the committee, made a commitment under oath, and not followed up. Bessent answered, “I would say watch this space after President Xi’s visit.” Pressley said she did not know what that meant. People were struggling. He had made commitments and kept none of them, and it was outrageous.

Pressley moved to the war with Iran. When Donald Trump launched it, she asked, how long did he say it would last? Bessent said he did not recall. She jogged his memory: four to five weeks. It had been six months. Since the war started, gas prices were up 52 percent. She asked if he was aware of that. Bessent began to answer about gas prices and then questioned the figure, saying he did not think it was a good number. Pressley took the exchange as confirmation he knew the issue and moved on, reclaiming her time.

Working people were paying more for utilities than they had five years earlier, more than 20 percent more. Bessent said he was aware of that. People were also paying over three times more on health insurance. When she asked if he had heard about the issue, he began a longer answer. She cut him off, telling him to stop filibustering and stop acting as if he did not know the facts.

The Joint Economic Committee had found that tariffs cost families on average $1,700. Bessent said he had not heard about the issue. Pressley noted that Trump had said he would reimburse people or send them a check for the cost of the tariffs and had not done so. A later committee estimate projected that families could face more than $2,500 in tariff costs in 2026 if the revenue and pass-through levels used in the calculation continued. Pressley told Bessent he knew about these issues and that she was questioning his integrity.

Pressley, first elected to Congress in 2018 after serving on the Boston City Council, is the first Black woman to represent Massachusetts in the House. Bessent, confirmed in January 2025 as the 79th secretary of the Treasury, came to the post from a career in global macro investing that included senior roles at Soros Fund Management and the founding of Key Square Group. In the hearing he had defended the administration’s economic approach by pointing to indicators he said showed improvement. Pressley drew a different line.

“You go on television and you say that Trump’s economic agenda is a great comeback, and that makes me question not only your integrity, but if you’re operating in the same reality as the people whom you are accountable to,” she said. He was enabling the president, she added, and it was shameful. As secretary he was responsible for overseeing the economy. She closed the round with the households she represents.

“Families in my district and across this country are struggling to afford a home, buy food, raise their kids, pay these high utility bills, and they deserve a government that’s going to make their life easier, not harder.”
