Eliud Kipchoge Runs First Sub-Two-Hour Marathon in Vienna

Pounding his chest and pointing to the crowd, Eliud Kipchoge came down the final stretch alone. In the last 500 metres his pacing team had stepped aside so he could finish by himself, the street lined with thousands who had come out in Vienna to see whether the barrier would fall. He crossed in 1:59:40.2.

That time beat two hours by twenty seconds over the full marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres, or 26.2 miles. On Saturday, 12 October 2019, the 34-year-old Kenyan became the first person in recorded history to run that far in under two hours. The occasion was the INEOS 1:59 Challenge, staged for him alone. It would not count as an official world record—rotating pacemakers, fluids handed up by bicycle, and a closed field all fell outside the rules—but the clock and the distance were real.

The morning began at 8:15 a.m. CEST on the Reichsbrücke Bridge over the Danube. From the bridge the route moved into the Prater park for 4.4 laps of the Hauptallee, the long tree-lined avenue chosen for its flat straights and its shelter from wind. The air sat at about 9 degrees Celsius. Wind stayed between 0.5 and 1.5 metres per second. Crowds filled the edges of the course. An electric pace car rolled ahead, projecting a green laser onto the road that marked the exact speed required: 2:50 per kilometre, every kilometre.

Forty-one pacemakers—some accounts said forty-two—rotated through in teams of seven or nine. They formed a V-shaped human shield five strong in front of Kipchoge, with two more runners on each side a couple of steps back, cutting the air and keeping the rhythm. Among them were Olympic 1,500 metres champion Matthew Centrowitz, Olympic 5,000 metres silver medallist Paul Chelimo, world 5,000 metres silver medallist Selemon Barega, multiple world medallist Bernard Lagat, and the Norwegian brothers Jakob, Filip and Henrik Ingebrigtsen. Lagat anchored the final leg. Fresh legs kept arriving. The formation never broke for long.

The splits arrived with almost no variation. Five kilometres passed in 14:14, ten in 28:28, fifteen in 42:34, twenty in 56:47. At halfway Kipchoge was already ten seconds ahead of the two-hour schedule. The second half held the same line: 25 kilometres in 1:10:59, 30 kilometres in 1:25:11, 35 kilometres in 1:39:23. Every single kilometre of the day sat between 2:48 and 2:52. In the closing stages he found another gear.
