When Evan Longoria Activated His Spidey-sense To Catch a Foul Ball

During spring training with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011, third baseman Evan Longoria was in the middle of an otherwise routine sideline interview when a screaming line drive suddenly veered toward the unsuspecting reporter beside him. Without breaking his relaxed posture, Longoria flicked out his bare hand and snatched the ball out of the air inches from the man's head, a reflex so smooth that it seemed to belong more to comic-book fiction than to the batting cage. The clip spread rapidly across the early social-media landscape, drawing millions of views and countless comparisons to Spider-Man's uncanny danger sense. It was later understood to be a carefully staged viral promotion connected to Gillette, a revelation that did little to dim the public's fascination with the stunt. In the end, the episode stood as an early landmark in athlete-driven viral marketing, demonstrating how a few seconds of seemingly spontaneous heroism could transform a ballplayer into an internet legend and blur the line between authentic sports moments and engineered spectacle.
