Vintage Soda Shops Keep Classic Drinks Flowing

Several enduring American food spots keep classic drinks and diner traditions alive. Phoenix’s MacAlpine’s Diner & Soda Fountain retains a soda fountain dating to around 1928, while New York’s Luncheonette Soda Candy draws customers for old-fashioned shakes and floats, made with a machine from the 1960s. Portland’s Cruiser’s Drive-In pairs classic burgers and fry sauce with thick milkshakes. Orange Julius, founded in 1926 around its signature frothy orange drink, grew to hundreds of locations before Dairy Queen acquired the brand in 1987.
