Virginia 5th District Candidates Vie in Tight Race
Virginia’s 5th Congressional District race between Republican incumbent John McGuire and former Rep. Tom Perriello has tightened, with one poll showing McGuire ahead by six points and the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics rating the contest a toss-up. The candidates have offered competing explanations for economic pressures: McGuire says lowering fuel costs is key to easing prices, while Perriello argues the government should reconsider its tariff authority and approach to the war, which he says have cost Virginia families money. Perriello also pointed to past infrastructure investments as a foundation for regional growth, as proposed data-center and manufacturing projects could bring more than $100 billion in investment and thousands of jobs to the district. On the campaign trail, McGuire has highlighted border enforcement and criticized Democratic policies, while campaigning alongside former Gov. Glenn Youngkin at stops across the district.
