Virginia Highlights Eastern Shore Markers for 250th
Virginia’s more than 2,700 historical highway markers are drawing attention as the nation marks its 250th anniversary, connecting travelers with the people and events behind the state’s landscape. New Eastern Shore markers highlight Whitesville Elementary School, built for Black children during segregation, and Northampton County histories including an early protest, a church and a Quaker meeting house. The statewide program is managed by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and the Virginia Department of Transportation; proposed topics must have regional, statewide or national significance and date back at least 50 years. Northampton County’s locally funded marker initiative is separate from the state program but similarly aims to share community history.
