VSMC Enters Risk Production at New $7.8 Billion Singapore Fab
VSMC held the grand opening of its first 300mm fab in Tampines, Singapore on September 28, 2026, attended by Minister Tan See Leng plus VIS and NXP executives. Tan called the 22-month build from the December 2024 groundbreaking a Singapore record for fab completion. The plant entered risk production after its first sample lot yielded above 99%. The VIS (60%)-NXP (40%) joint venture, formed September 2024, has a $7.8 billion budget with VIS contributing $2.4 billion and NXP $1.6 billion plus further funding and loans. Leuh Fang said today's opening ceremony "marks a significant milestone for VSMC and reflects VIS' long-term commitment to deepening its presence in Singapore while expanding its global footprint." Rafael Sotomayor said it enhances NXP geographic resilience, supply control and cost competitiveness. Cindy Koh said the fab reflects strong confidence in Singapore as a global advanced-manufacturing node. Full capacity by 2029 is projected at about 44,000 wafers a month and 1,600 jobs. No sources dispute these figures or events. Volume manufacturing is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
