Waimanalo Man Dies After Tree Falls on Tent as Hurricane Lowell Passes

A 31-year-old Waimānalo man, identified by the Honolulu medical examiner as Floyd Ruiz, died after a large tree fell on him near Sherwood Beach during Hurricane Lowell. Officials said Ruiz was believed to be homeless and living in a tent; the death was classified as accidental and unattended, with no suspicion of foul play, although authorities were still assessing its direct connection to the storm. Lowell brought damaging winds, heavy rain, flooding, mudslides, downed trees and widespread power outages across Hawaii, including nearly all of Kauai’s utility customers and about 33,000 homes without power. Gov. Josh Green said coastal damage could total hundreds of millions of dollars, while crews worked to restore essential services, clear roads and respond to additional injuries and structural damage.
