Washington Post to close Springfield plant affecting 118 workers
The Washington Post’s Springfield, Virginia, printing plant is scheduled to close on Dec. 31, 2026, affecting 118 employees, including press operators, machinists, maintenance staff and circulation workers. The company says it is relocating—not ending—its print operations to a smaller facility near Dulles in Loudoun County, where it is installing a new press as part of efforts to modernize production and reduce costs. Reports indicate that about half of the Springfield plant’s overall workforce may relocate, but it is unclear whether any of the 118 workers identified in the notice will transfer. The Springfield facility has operated since 1980, and its closure comes amid declining print circulation and broader cost-cutting at the newspaper.
