Washington Spirit clinch playoff berth, beat Gotham 1-0

Lucia Di Guglielmo scored her first NWSL goal in the 70th minute off Mélissa Bethi's lobbed pass as the Washington Spirit beat Gotham FC 1-0 on Oct. 17, 2026 at Audi Field. The win clinched a playoff berth for the Spirit (16-8-4), was their first over Gotham since June 23, 2024, denied Gotham (16-5-7) the NWSL Shield, and snapped Gotham's four-match unbeaten streak. Sandy MacIver recorded her 10th clean sheet with two saves. Leicy Santos returned for 45 minutes in her first appearance since Aug. 8. Despite Gotham's 63 percent possession, Washington outshot them 13-5 with expected goals of 0.97 to 0.43 and held on. Coach Adrian Gonzalez said it was key to stay compact and narrow protecting the middle and that Santos "was ready to play 45 minutes today" and "showed her talent." Di Guglielmo called it "like a dream, or even more," with "the perfect first goal, perfect win." Andi Sullivan said she was "still focused on this next regular season game." Left-rated and right-rated outlets both led with the goal and playoff clinch via Associated Press reporting, with no contested facts between them in the record.
