Early Washington Results Appear to Reject Parents Rights Initiative
Washington voters appeared to reject Initiative 001, preserving the student-privacy law amended by the Legislature in 2025, though early results were still being counted. The measure would have restored provisions of the 2024 Parents’ Bill of Rights, including access to students’ academic, medical and mental health counseling records within 10 business days, advance notice about certain nonemergency medical services, and additional rights to review school materials and opt out of some activities. Supporters argued parents should be informed about their children’s education and health; opponents warned that broader disclosure and notification requirements could jeopardize the privacy and safety of vulnerable students. The initiative was backed by Let’s Go Washington and other conservative groups, while educators and LGBTQ youth advocates opposed it.
