Water Risks Raise Household, Industrial Costs
Hidden plumbing leaks and frozen pipes can cause extensive damage and costly repairs. Appliance hoses behind refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines may leak unnoticed, damaging flooring, cabinets and walls while wasting water. La Crosse Utilities recommends keeping pipes warm and insulated, running a small stream of cold water during freezes, and maintaining a thermostat setting of at least 55 degrees when away. A Texas homeowner’s pipe burst despite shutting off the water and opening faucets; the line ran near a bathroom window through a poorly insulated attic, and the homeowners were quoted $7,700 for partial repiping or $15,500 for a whole-home replacement.
