Waymo reportedly plans 20,000-car fleet
Waymo plans to expand its fleet from about 4,000 vehicles to 8,000 by the end of 2026 and 20,000 by the end of 2027, using $5 billion it recently borrowed from lenders including PIMCO, Blackstone and Sixth Street. The Alphabet-owned company says the funding will support growth in the United States and internationally; it currently operates in 15 U.S. cities and is preparing to serve additional locations, including Toronto. The expansion includes an order for 5,100 electric vans from China’s Zeekr, a move that has raised concerns in Washington about data security and technology competition.
