French tourist dies after car stuck in Death Valley

A 68-year-old French tourist, Pierre Michel Formosa, died in Death Valley National Park after his car became stuck in mud on West Side Road near Queen of Sheba Mine Road on August 17. He and his travel companion attempted to walk across the salt flats toward Badwater Road for help, but Formosa collapsed after about 1.3 miles as temperatures reached 116°F. His companion continued on to seek help and a passing motorist alerted authorities. Park rangers, an Inyo County deputy, and a California Highway Patrol helicopter located Formosa later that afternoon, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, with autopsy results pending. Officials emphasized that Death Valley’s extreme heat, vast distances, and remoteness can be dangerous regardless of experience, urging visitors to plan carefully, carry ample water, and stay with vehicles when stranded.
