Heat, Storms and Cooler Weather for Labor Day

Labor Day weekend weather will vary widely across the U.S., with heat, humidity and storm threats affecting several regions. The northern Plains and Upstate South Carolina could see temperatures in the upper 80s to mid-90s, scattered thunderstorms and isolated severe weather, including hail and damaging winds, before cooler conditions arrive Monday; Central Texas will also see intermittent storm chances and temperatures from the 70s to around 100°F. South Florida is expected to remain stormy, while powerful storms could disrupt travel in parts of the Rockies and coastal Alaska could see rain, high surf and scattered showers. The Chicago area is expected to cool after a historic four-day stretch of September 90-degree temperatures, bringing lower humidity and mostly pleasant, dry conditions Sunday and Monday; parts of the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Wisconsin and northern Minnesota may see isolated showers before more comfortable, mainly dry conditions develop. Southern California, including the Coachella Valley, should remain cooler than normal under moisture from distant Hurricane Marie, with limited shower and thunderstorm chances especially Sunday, followed by gradual warming early next week. Massachusetts and St. Louis are expected to be mostly dry, while Calgary’s rain chances increase Sunday with a possibility of heavy rain; central Mississippi will face heat indices above 105°F with limited relief.
