Gulf Coast Braces for Hurricane Isaias
Hurricane Isaias approached the northern Gulf Coast Friday, with landfall expected near Florida’s Panhandle and forecasters warning of damaging winds, storm surge, heavy rain, flooding and possible prolonged power outages; flash flooding was also possible around metro Atlanta. Officials declared emergencies, ordered coastal evacuations—including for nonresidents and visitors in parts of Baldwin and Mobile counties, Alabama—and opened sandbag locations, while some Gulf oil production was paused. Alabama closed state offices in nine counties at noon, and roads near Orange Beach and Gulf Shores were closed; no Mississippi Coast road closures had been reported as of 4:30 p.m. Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport planned to suspend commercial operations at 1 p.m., and military, park and coastal facilities announced closures. Schools and universities across the Florida Panhandle and parts of Alabama changed schedules or canceled classes and activities; other sports, festivals and community events were canceled or postponed, including Friday-night operations at the Alabama National Fair, which planned to reopen Saturday.
