Phoenix-Area Storms Damage Homes, Cut Power
Powerful winds, hail and heavy rain swept through Mesa and parts of the Phoenix area Tuesday night, uprooting trees and damaging homes, vehicles and other property. Near Gilbert Road and University Drive, fallen trees and branches crushed cars and damaged carports, while one resident reported a partially collapsed apartment roof that forced her family to seek another place to stay. The storm also brought down trees and stadium lights at Quail Run Park and damaged a nearby school, which planned to move students to virtual classes for several days while repairs are assessed. More than 4,400 APS and SRP customers were without power Wednesday afternoon as crews and residents began cleanup. Additional storms were forecast, with residents urged to monitor weather alerts.
