Four Adults Hospitalized After Lightning Strike Near School
Four adults were taken to a local hospital after a lightning strike near the bus drop-off at El Mirage Elementary School in El Mirage, Arizona, on Friday morning. El Mirage Police said they received a report at 8:39 a.m.; other accounts place the response just after 8:30 a.m. Police and El Mirage Fire found the four adults conscious. A Dysart School District spokesperson said staff felt the effects of a nearby lightning strike. No children were injured, according to FOX 10 KSAZ. El Mirage Police said four adults had been struck by lightning. Fire Captain Joseph Rivera said none of the four were directly struck and that one woman holding an umbrella reported pain in both arms. Carrie, a librarian at the El Mirage Library across the street, said: "The lightning and the thunder were right on top of each other, so loud that it made me jump." She added, "It felt like the building almost shook." She said at least a dozen car alarms went off nearby. "It's wild," she said. "Then the rain just came down in buckets." The incident came as storms moved through the Phoenix area, bringing heavy rain and hail to Peoria, Sun City and Buckeye starting around 8 a.m. The extent of the adults' injuries was not reported.
