Beach Hazard Statements Warn California, Carolinas Coasts
The National Weather Service issued beach hazard statements for several stretches of the California and Carolina coasts, warning of dangerous surf and currents from Sunday through Tuesday. Northern California alerts cover the Del Norte, Humboldt and Mendocino coasts, with sneaker waves capable of sweeping people or heavy logs ashore; Bay Area beaches also face sneaker waves and strong rip currents Monday and Tuesday. Coastal Pender and New Hanover counties in North Carolina and Coastal Georgetown in South Carolina face strong longshore currents and a moderate rip-current risk on Saturday. Officials advise staying well back from the water, avoiding rocks, jetties and piers, checking with lifeguards, and never turning your back on the ocean; Bay Area guidance also warns drivers not to cross flooded roads or bypass barricades.
