Western Forests Offer Holiday Tree-Cutting Permits

Christmas tree-cutting permits are available or opening soon across several national forests and Colorado’s Golden Gate Canyon State Park, with rules and dates varying by location. Sawtooth National Forest permits cost $10 and allow one tree per family or organization; fourth graders with a valid Every Kid Outdoors pass can receive one free permit. Lassen National Forest permits cost $10, allow up to two per household, and are valid through Dec. 25; Bridger-Teton permits are sold online through Recreation.gov. In Colorado, Golden Gate Canyon State Park is awarding 250 permits through a lottery open until Nov. 15, with selected applicants cutting trees Dec. 5 for $35 each. Forest officials say cutting designated small trees can help improve forest health, and advise buyers to check local rules, maps, and conditions before heading out.
