White Cane Awareness Events Highlight Independence for Blind and Low-Vision People
Organizations in several communities are marking White Cane Awareness Day with walks, rallies and public programs that highlight the cane’s role in mobility, safety and independence for people who are blind or have low vision. Events in Asheville, Syracuse, Malappuram and Lake Charles invite residents to learn about vision loss and recognize the abilities and rights of people with visual disabilities. Participants and advocates emphasize that vision loss varies, that a cane should not prompt assumptions about someone’s needs, and that people with vision loss can lead meaningful, independent lives. In Duluth, the Lighthouse Center for Vital Living also offers training in cane use and assistive technology, along with assessments and adaptations to help people manage daily activities and return to work.
