Winter clothing drives support children across regions
Community organizations across several states are expanding winter-clothing assistance for children and families as colder weather approaches. Programs include free coat-and-shoe distributions, coat drives, and shopping events that let families choose new winter gear; one South Bend event served about 150 families. Donation rules vary: Maine’s Coats of Kindness accepts gently worn coats and has cleaners prepare them for redistribution, while New Mexico’s KOATs for Kids is seeking new coats for students and will distribute them through school districts. In southern Berkshire County, Kiwanis volunteers purchase clothing requested by families, with up to $100 per child, and the program relies entirely on donations. Organizers say these efforts help ease the cost of keeping children warm, and some anticipate especially high need this winter.
