WMO warns wildfire smoke may be undercounting tens of thousands of deaths
The World Meteorological Organization warns that increasingly intense wildfires and heatwaves are undermining global progress on air quality, public health and ecosystem protection. Although regulations have reduced industrial and transportation emissions in parts of Europe and North America, exposure to wildfire-generated PM2.5 is rising, and extreme fire-smoke events have reportedly tripled since the 1990s. Fine particles can penetrate the lungs and bloodstream, while conventional risk models may underestimate wildfire-related deaths by as much as 93 percent; one cited estimate links such events to nearly 100,000 additional deaths annually from 2010 to 2018. The WMO also highlighted worsening ground-level ozone during hot, stagnant conditions and called for stronger monitoring of PM2.5, ozone, black carbon and airborne microplastics. It urged governments to coordinate climate and air-quality policies because the two problems are closely connected and cannot be effectively addressed in isolation.
