Nepali woman rescued alive 11 days after deadly floods buried her home

A 64-year-old woman, identified in reports as Chandrika or Chandika Shrestha, was rescued alive from the debris of a partially submerged home in Betrawati, Nuwakot, Nepal, after being trapped for about 10 to 11 days. Rescue workers heard her faint cries while clearing flood- and landslide-damaged buildings and excavated her from mud inside the house. She received initial medical care before being flown by helicopter for further treatment, and reports said her condition was stable or out of danger. Her rescue offered a rare moment of hope after flash floods and landslides on Aug. 26 killed more than 1,000 people and left many others missing across northern Nepal.
