Communities Plan 9/11 Anniversary Commemorations

Communities across New York, Maryland, Michigan and Texas are organizing ceremonies, vigils and public activities for the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people. At the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, events will honor the 40 passengers and crew members who resisted the hijackers, including wreath layings, a reading of victims’ names, remembrance bells and ceremonies near the Wall of Names, with some portions broadcast online. Other commemorations will include memorial services, candlelight and interfaith ceremonies, athletic tributes, flag displays, readings of victims’ names, educational programs and memorials featuring recovered steel. Schools and community organizations are emphasizing outreach to younger Americans, while events across the country will honor victims, first responders, service members and survivors and reflect on the attacks’ continuing impact.
