Canada Marks 25 Years Since 9/11

As the United States marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, survivor Brian Clark is recounting how he escaped the South Tower after it was struck and rescued a man who remains his friend. Clark described the chaos and destruction inside the tower, the terror of seeing people jump, and his decision to keep descending despite conflicting instructions. The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people, including 24 Canadians, after al-Qaeda hijackers crashed planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field. American diplomat Baxter Hunt recalled the widespread Canadian solidarity that followed, including flowers outside the U.S. Embassy, a national mourning gathering of about 80,000 people on Parliament Hill and moments of silence across the country. In Gander, Newfoundland, residents sheltered more than 6,500 passengers from 38 diverted planes, while communities across Canada helped tens of thousands of other stranded travelers.
