Iran to Double Gasoline Price for Heavy Users

Iran will double the price of gasoline consumed beyond 110 liters per month starting Sept. 8, raising the third-tier rate to 100,000 rials, or 10,000 tomans, per liter. The first 60 liters will remain priced at 15,000 rials per liter and the next 50 liters at 30,000 rials. The government says the change responds to wartime pressures, U.S. sanctions, rising demand and fuel-supply problems, including a previously cited daily gasoline deficit of roughly 14 million to 15 million liters. The move comes as inflation and the weakening rial intensify economic hardship and could raise transport and consumer costs. Authorities have treated fuel-price increases cautiously because a 2019 increase triggered widespread protests.
