Mexico church festival fireworks blast kills 10, injures 64, cause unclear

At least 10 people were killed and more than 60 injured when pyrotechnic material exploded Saturday night during preparations for a patron-saint festival near a church in the Santa María Canchesdá community of Temascalcingo, Mexico State, about 100 miles northwest of Mexico City. The blast collapsed an adjacent building or walls, ignited a fire and left people trapped beneath debris as residents fled. Two priests were reportedly among the injured, and emergency crews from regional, state and national agencies conducted rescue operations. Authorities have not determined the cause and have opened an investigation, amid concerns about the frequent use and storage of fireworks at Mexican religious and community celebrations.
