37 Suspected Miners Die in Niger State Custody After Raids
Thirty-seven suspected illegal miners died after 67 detainees were reportedly held in an overcrowded Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps cell in Minna, Niger State, following arrests during anti-illegal-mining operations on September 15 and 16, 2026. Authorities have not established the cause of death; possible suffocation, exposure to hazardous substances or poisoning remain under investigation, while survivors reportedly described poor ventilation and inadequate access to food, water and medical care. President Bola Tinubu ordered a full and transparent investigation, leading to a 10-member federal panel alongside separate state and human-rights inquiries, forensic autopsies and evidence preservation. At least 24 NSCDC personnel have been suspended or detained and moved to Abuja for questioning, while the Niger State NSCDC commandant was suspended and officials said those found responsible would face punishment. Human-rights groups, miners’ representatives, civil society organisations and regional youth leaders demanded accountability and improved detainee treatment, while protests prompted Niger State authorities to impose a curfew. Governor Mohammed Bago declared mourning, called for accountability and urged safer, regulated mining practices.
