Macron, Carney plan Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon summit

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and French President Emmanuel Macron agreed to deepen cooperation in space, defense, energy, telecommunications, fisheries, climate resilience and business during talks in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. Their governments will explore shared space infrastructure, including launch systems and ground facilities, and seek stronger partnerships on critical minerals, liquefied natural gas and energy security. The meeting reflected Canada’s effort to diversify its economic and security relationships as tariffs, political pressure and annexation rhetoric from U.S. President Donald Trump strained ties with Washington. Carney welcomed the prospect of Canada becoming the European Union’s first associate member, while Macron endorsed closer Canada-EU links as part of a broader push for strategic sovereignty. Carney also proposed a four-country framework involving Canada, France, the United States and China to help govern artificial intelligence. The summit was the first official visit to the territory by a Canadian prime minister and Macron’s first visit there in more than a decade.
