Suspect Dies After Shooting Officer Outside Belleville Synagogue

Sean Ward, 29, of Quinte West, died after allegedly arriving by truck with a shotgun and opening fire on Const. Jeff Smith outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, as congregants gathered for Yom Kippur. Smith, a nearly 13-year veteran of the Belleville Police Service, was wounded in the exchange and remains in critical but stable condition; a second officer also fired at Ward. Investigators estimate that 20 to 30 shots were discharged, with some bullets breaking synagogue windows, but none of the roughly two dozen worshippers inside was injured. Authorities have not confirmed a motive, although an Ontario police watchdog spokesperson said the attack appeared consistent with a hate-motivated or terrorist incident while emphasizing that the investigation remains ongoing.
