Teenager Injures 11 Students in Türkiye Shooting

A teenager opened fire outside İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turgutlu, Manisa province, at about 8 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said 11 people were injured, two seriously. Police detained the suspected shooter, a ninth-grade student at the school whose name was withheld as a minor, along with his mother, father and grandfather. Gürlek said the weapon was the grandfather's registered gun; HaberTurk reported it was taken from the grandmother's house and that the attacker fired randomly near the school before trying to flee on foot. Two chief prosecutors were assigned. The Education Ministry suspended classes for the day, sent three inspectors and deployed psychological support teams. Early casualty reports conflicted. İHA, NTV and the Egyptian Gazette initially reported eight injured. 1news.az live updates cited four injured, then a Sözcü report of one student killed and four injured, later revised to 11 wounded and four detained. DHA security camera footage showed the alleged attacker walking with what appeared to be a rifle; other footage showed police wrestling a person in a white shirt to the ground as a woman screamed and people filmed from the fence. Cumhuriyet reported anxious parents rushed the school and confronted police blocking entry. Investigators are examining bullying claims, how the gun was obtained and stored, and parental supervision. The shooting came a day after Education Minister Yusuf Tekin and Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi signed a security protocol for the 2026-2027 school year. Çiftçi said: "To ensure such pain is never experienced again, I would like to remind everyone that we must be extremely vigilant this year." It followed two deadly school attacks in Türkiye in April. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had said of such attacks: "When we look at similar attacks around the world, especially in the United States, we see one of the perpetrators' aims is to terrorize society."
