More Than 100 Arrested at Protest Near U.N.

More than 100 people were arrested in Manhattan on Sept. 24 after hundreds of demonstrators blocked First Avenue near the United Nations to protest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit and the war in Gaza. The protest was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace and the Democratic Socialists of America; those reported detained included Susan Sarandon, Hannah Einbinder, Cynthia Nixon and local elected officials, and police said the arrests were peaceful. Protesters called for an end to U.S. arms shipments to Israel, which rejects accusations of genocide and war crimes. Separately, UJA-Federation of New York and the Jewish Community Relations Council organized a rally urging world leaders to confront antisemitism and calling for stronger security for Jewish institutions. Netanyahu criticized delegations that walked out during his General Assembly address.
