Searchers Find Wreck, Remains Near Block Island

A nonprofit searching off Rhode Island says it found the wreck and human remains believed to be from the fishing vessel Mistress, which capsized near Block Island in 2019, killing its captain and a crew member. The wreck lies about 92 feet underwater and within 50 feet of a wind-farm turbine; the group has asked the Coast Guard to reopen its investigation and secure the site for forensic analysis. Separately, a powerful nor’easter washed a wooden ship fragment ashore on Nantucket that is believed to be from the Warren Sawyer, a schooner wrecked near Miacomet Beach in 1884. The latest fragment has not been confirmed, and researchers have noted discrepancies in previously recovered evidence that prevent a definitive identification.
