Himlung Himal Avalanche Kills Four, 12 Missing

An avalanche buried the base camp on Nepal’s 7,126-metre Himlung Himal on Sunday, killing four Nepali guides and support workers and leaving about 12 people missing; 10 people were rescued. The workers had been preparing the camp and climbing route ahead of the autumn season. Rescue operations were hampered and then paused because of severe weather, deep snow and dangerous mountain conditions, with rescuers warning that survival prospects were poor. The disaster comes amid widespread rain-triggered floods and landslides across Nepal, which have killed dozens in recent days, as the country continues to recover from catastrophic August flooding.
