Malaysia Begins Repatriating 1,476 of 5,000 Myanmar Nationals

Malaysia on Sept 29, 2026 began returning 1,476 of 5,000 Myanmar nationals via three Myanmar naval vessels from Lumut, after Anwar Ibrahim’s July agreement with Myanmar and Myanmar’s September pledge of safe and dignified returns. Malaysia is not a 1951 Refugee Convention signatory and lacks a domestic refugee framework. The Home Ministry confirmed the start; reporters and UNHCR were barred from the site. Malaysia says the returns are voluntary. UNHCR, citing 193,824 Myanmar refugees and asylum-seekers in Malaysia as of February 2026 including 126,144 Rohingya, said it was not involved and that civil war makes safe returns untenable. Over 160 civil society groups urged a halt. James Bawi Thang Bik said asylum-seekers including a UNHCR card holder were among those sent and feared forced frontline conscription as a death sentence. Authorities have not disclosed how many of the 1,476 are Rohingya. Anwar called them a security, economic and hostility burden and plans to invite Min Aung Hlaing. Latheefa Koya called the decision disgraceful and amoral. Tricia Yeoh said Anwar is at his weakest point after UMNO concessions, scandals and party division.
