Officer Fatally Shoots Theft Suspect in Ocean View

A 31-year-old man, identified by police as Nafetelai Teisina, was fatally shot by a Hawaii Island police officer Wednesday in Ocean View after fleeing from a theft inquiry into dense brush. Police say he threw rocks at an officer, who was injured; the officer gave verbal commands and used a Taser multiple times before firing, and the suspect continued trying to throw rocks afterward. The officer provided lifesaving aid until medics arrived; he was treated at a hospital and later released. The department has opened a critical incident review, and an autopsy was scheduled.
