Six Killed After Pilot Reports Icing Before Wisconsin Crash

Six people died when a Piper PA-46 crashed around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in a wooded area of Dellona, near Lake Delton in Sauk County, Wisconsin; no one on the ground was injured. The victims were Ronald R. Riek, 63, of Woodville; Tyler J. Harvey, 36, of Cadott; Mary K. Brion, 67, of Nelson; Amanda M. Haremza, 45, and her 13-year-old son, Rylan, of Altoona; and Kayla C. Turpin, 39, of Eau Claire. The plane was flying from Kenosha to Menomonie, and the pilot reported icing at 24,000 feet and requested to descend. After air traffic control approved the descent, the plane entered a right-turning descent that accelerated until communications and tracking data were lost. Rain and a thunderstorm were in the area, but investigators have not determined whether weather contributed to the crash or established its cause. The FAA and NTSB are investigating, reviewing flight data, communications, maintenance and other records; a preliminary report is expected within 30 days.
