Amber Guyger Released on Parole After Seven Years
Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger was released on parole after serving seven years of a 10-year sentence for murdering her neighbor, Botham Jean, in his apartment in 2018. She said she mistakenly entered Jean’s home, believed it was her own and shot him because she thought he was an intruder; she was convicted in 2019. The Texas parole board approved her release on the seventh anniversary of her conviction, citing her institutional conduct and completion of rehabilitation programs, after denying parole in 2024. Guyger will remain under supervision until her sentence ends in 2029, with restrictions including no contact with Jean’s family and a ban on living in Dallas County. Jean’s family and civil rights advocates expressed outrage and grief, while Guyger’s attorney said she remains remorseful and has arranged housing and work.
