Oregon School Shooting Kills Four, Children Face Trauma
A 16-year-old former student opened fire with a shotgun in a special education classroom at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, killing three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher; another child was injured. A teacher tried to disarm the attacker, and a parent who witnessed the shooting entered the school and shot him, ending the attack. The shooting has renewed attention to active-shooter preparedness and children’s emotional wellbeing. Experts recommend age-appropriate conversations, reassuring children, and limiting their exposure to violent coverage; a Lexington police officer also urged training and planning.
