Mexico Sentences Three Men to 158 Years Each
A Mexican judge sentenced Jesús Gerardo, Irineo Francisco and Ángel Jesús to 158 years and nine months in prison each for murdering Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Carter Rhoad during a surfing trip in Baja California in April 2024. The men were convicted of aggravated homicide and related robbery and vehicle-theft offenses; prosecutors said they targeted the group to steal parts from their truck, then shot the victims after they resisted and dumped their bodies in a well near Ensenada. A woman who admitted involvement in the robbery was previously sentenced to 20 years. The judge rejected prosecutors’ request for more than $100,000 in damages, saying compensation must be pursued in civil court, and the defense indicated it plans to appeal. Relatives described the verdict as a measure of justice but said it could not undo their loss.
