Saudi Coalition Blames Technical Malfunction for Fatal Najran Helicopter Crash
A Saudi National Guard AH-6i reconnaissance helicopter crashed in the Najran region of southwestern Saudi Arabia on October 18, 2026, killing both officers aboard. Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said the aircraft went down inside Saudi territory near the Yemeni border in an area under the National Guard Ministry and attributed the crash to a technical malfunction. What is contested: Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree posted on X a day earlier that Houthi forces had shot down a Saudi Apache helicopter near Najran while it carried out hostile activities targeting Houthi positions along the border. Al-Maliki replied to Saree’s post with a photo of several Apaches lined up and wrote, "You claim to have shot it down, but it will enter the battlefield soon." The coalition identified the aircraft as an AH-6i; Saree called it an Apache. Available statements left unclear whether the two sides were referring to the same helicopter.
