Bend Teacher Describes School Shooting
Becky Drury, a teacher critically wounded in the Oct. 15 shooting at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, said she was shot at close range as she tried to return to her special-needs classroom and played dead because she could not move or protect anyone. She said she had no chance to act before being shot, addressing what she described as contradictory reports about her actions. The attack killed special-education teacher Megan Lambert and three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and wounded Drury and a 7-year-old student. Police said four staff members and five children were in the classroom; another staff member confronted the gunman, and a pursuing parent fatally shot him. Investigators have withheld further details while the case remains active, and the school district reopened schools with additional police presence as the community begins recovery.
