Guatemalan Smuggler Sentenced 30 Years After 53 Deaths
Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco, a Guatemalan man who pleaded guilty to helping organize a human-smuggling operation, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for his role in the 2022 Quintana Road tragedy. Prosecutors said he recruited migrants and helped arrange the journeys of two people who died and one who survived. On June 27, 2022, 64 migrants were packed into a tractor-trailer traveling from Laredo to San Antonio in extreme heat without working air conditioning; 53 died and 11 survived. Miranda-Orozco was arrested in Guatemala in 2024 and extradited to the United States in March 2025. Other organizers have also been convicted and sentenced, including one who received an 87-year term and another who was sentenced to life in prison.
