Taiwan Cancels 600-Plus Flights Amid Champi Approach
Typhoon Champi weakened after briefly reaching super-typhoon strength but passed near northeastern Taiwan with powerful winds, torrential rain and dangerous waves; authorities warned that a slowdown or course change could prolong its effects. Taiwan closed schools, offices and financial markets, canceled more than 600 domestic and international flights, and evacuated nearly 1,300 people from vulnerable areas; one person was killed and 94 injured. The storm was forecast to bring up to 90 centimetres of rain to parts of Taiwan before continuing toward China and Japan. Southwestern Japan reported injuries, power outages and flight cancellations, while the Philippines restricted some sea travel and closed an airport. Thai Airways suspended flights to and from Taipei and Kaohsiung.
