German Man Arrested, Accused in Indiana Teen’s Suicide

An 18-year-old man from Hamburg has been arrested in Germany on suspicion of murder and aggravated assault in the death of a 14-year-old girl from Indiana. Prosecutors allege that while he was 17, he used Discord to manipulate the girl into self-harm, pressured her to record it, and sought footage of her death; they say he threatened to expose compromising material to her loved ones. Investigators believe he may have sought the recording to gain status or entry into an online group known as NMK, which reporting links to a wider network associated with the labels 764 and COM. The investigation involved the FBI, Fort Wayne police and German authorities, and officials have warned that online groups can groom and exploit vulnerable young people.
