Pope Leo Cleared for November Latin America Trip
Pope Leo XIV is set to visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from Nov. 6 to 17 after doctors determined his recovery from surgery for localized lung cancer does not medically prevent travel. The trip, which includes numerous flights and high-altitude stops, will be the longest journey of his pontificate; Leo has said he is eager to return to the region, particularly Peru, where he spent many years. He will skip the Oct. 27 interfaith peace gathering in Assisi as a precaution after doctors advised against the helicopter trip so soon after surgery, and will send participants a message supporting dialogue and peace. A follow-up X-ray showed excellent recovery, and the Vatican said no further cancer treatment is needed.
